Yippy or depression? Which word caused Donald Trump's tariff U-turn

As President Donald Trump walked back on tariffs, he said people were getting yippy and afraid as he announced that the reciprocal tariffs would take into effect after 90 days post the ongoing negotiation with the countries. Except for China. No negotiation has taken place with China as China vowed to escalate the trade war, paying the US back in the same coin.

“Well, I thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line,” Trump told reporters at the White House. "They were getting yippy, you know, they were getting a little bit yippy, a little bit afraid, unlike these champions, because we have a big job to do. No other president would have done what I did. No other president. And it had to be done.”

A Wall Street Journal report on what happened in the background of the 90-day pause on tariffs indicated that Trump himself got 'Yippy'. The report said he had told advisers that he was prepared to accept 'pain' and 'recession', but he said that he wanted to be sure that it didn't cause a depression.

The Journal report said that his Truth Social post announcing the paude was sent out when he was sitting in the Oval Office with treasury secretary Scott Bessent and commerce secretary Howard Lutnick.

'Trump was also in listening mode'

The report said that over the past few days, he had been asking friends and advisers about the markers. On Wednesday, he had lunch with financier and investor Charles Schwab and met with Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who had warned that Michigan was already feeling the impact of the tariffs throughout its automotive industry. Trump also said he watched JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon's interview on Fox.

Dimon knew that Trump and his inner circle often watched Fox and he was confident that his message would likely get through to them, the report said.
