Five people, including a police officer and the suspect died in a shooting incident in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, after the gunman opened fire near a corporate office building on Park Avenue.

"Four people, including a New York Police Department officer, were killed in today's shooting in Midtown Manhattan," police told CNN. They added that the suspected gunman appeared to have died from a "self-inflicted injury."

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, "the scene has been contained" and the shooter, described as a lone gunman carrying a long rifle, "has been neutralised."

The gunfire erupted at 345 Park Avenue, a 634-foot skyscraper housing major corporate offices, including those of the NFL and Blackstone.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area, calling it an " active shooter investigation " in a post on X.

"New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now. Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street," Adams wrote on X.

Videos circulating online shows a massive police response, with officers in ballistic vests and ambulances crowding the area.

The NYPD bomb squad and drone units were deployed, and heavily armed officers secured the scene at the height of the evening rush hour. Several ambulances gathered nearby, while multiple helicopters maintained surveillance from above.

Shad Sakib, an office employee, told AFP that while preparing to leave work, a public announcement instructed everyone to remain where they were.

"Everyone was confused with like, 'wait, what's going on?' And then someone finally realized that it's online, that someone walked in with a machine gun," the witness said.

"He walked right into a building right next door. We saw the photo of him walking through the same area that I walked through to get lunch here. You would think it won't happen to you, and then it does," he added.

According to witnesses the incident occurred in an office complex housing the Blackstone investment company.

Mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani said he was "heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer... in my thoughts," in a post on X.

The location features numerous prestigious business hotels, alongside various corporate offices, financial institutions and legal practices.

Police said that the investigation remains active, even as the immediate threat has been contained.

The motive behind the shooting has not yet been confirmed.
