'Immediate and unconditional' ceasefire: Thailand & Cambodia agree for truce; Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim announces

NEW DELHI: Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire starting at midnight Monday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced following mediation talks in Malaysia.

“Both Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding as follows: One, an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with effect from 24 hours local time, midnight on 28th July 2025, tonight,” Anwar said, according to news agency AFP.

The ceasefire comes after tensions between the two neighbouring Southeast Asian nations had escalated in recent weeks. Malaysia played a mediating role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.

Anwar did not disclose further details on the terms of the ceasefire or the issues discussed but underscored the importance of restoring peace in the region.

Less than 24 hours before the ceasefire agreement, US President Donald Trump had warned that he would not conclude any trade deals with either Thailand or Cambodia unless they halted the fighting. Trump said he believed both nations wanted to settle their differences after his intervention with both governments.
