Katy Perry, Lauren Sanchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, Gayle King and Kerianne Flynn flew to space today for 11 minutes in the Blue Origin NS-31. The no-pilot automatic rocket took off at 9.30am from Texas and will pass just above the Karman line, which is generally regarded as the edge of space and is an invisible boundary at a height of 62 miles. The crew then took parachutes and landed in the Texas desert. Oprah was there at the station to witness the lift-off.
This is the first female-only crew since Valentina Tereshkova launched into orbit on a solo mission in 1963.
So, they all got designer space suits designed by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the co-founders of Monse, and also the creative directors at luxury fashion brand Oscar de la Renta.
Jeff Bezos' fiancee Lauren Sanchez roped in the designers for stylish suits for her girl gang in space, which also make them look like astronauts. Aisha Bowe is a former Nasa engineer and Amanda Nguyen is a bioastronautics researcher.
Details of how minutely everything has been done to even discuss what underwear they would wear have emerged and social media users are not being kind to the gang of girls. Katy Perry's comment that they -- the stylish girl gang -- are putting the 'a**' in astronaut has not gone down well.
Democratic leader Nina Turner said Jeff Bezos should pay a wealth tax for healthcare if he can splurge so much to send Katy Perry into space. "If Jeff Bezos can send Katy Perry into space, he can pay a wealth tax so every American has debt-free healthcare."
"Katy Perry and Gayle King being launched into space while publicly saying they are bringing the “a** back in astronauts” and “makeup/glam is important for the mission” is some kind of black mirror parody and you can’t convince me otherwise," Republican commentator Meghan McCain said.
