Republican representative Nancy Mace moved an official resolution on Wednesday to expel Democratic Party's LaMonica McIver from the United States House of Representatives.
The resolution comes two days after the New Jersey representative was served with federal charges for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers during a protest outside an immigration detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, on May 9.
"We just filed an Official Resolution to expel Lamonica McIver from the US House of Representatives. No one is above the law. Assault is a crime. The American people deserve better," Mace, a South Carolina representative, posted on X.
In a separate post, Mace called out McIver for "disgraceful abuse of power."
"Members of Congress don’t get a free pass to break the law. No one is above the law — not even you, LaMonica. This was a disgraceful abuse of power. She has no business serving in Congress," the post read.
McIver was protesting at Newark's Delaney Hall detention facility with two other members of the US Congress to conduct what they claimed were their "congressionally mandated oversight duties." Her fellow Democrat Ras Baraka, the mayor of Newark, who was arrested after the incident, later had his charges dropped.

Law enforcement alleged that during the confrontation, McIver "slammed her forearm into the body of a uniformed immigration official" while trying to "restrain the agent by forcibly grabbing him." She is also accused of "blocking" immigration agents from arresting mayor Baraka.
Also on Wednesday, a New Jersey federal judge released McIver on her own recognizance during the congresswoman’s first court appearance, albeit virtually from Washington, on assault charges.
McIver has called the charges "absurd and ridiculous."
