Thiruvananthapuram: On the 50th anniversary of Emergency, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the period was not an unexpected ill fate that befell Indian society. Instead, it was the culmination of dictatorial tendencies and violation of civil rights that were brewing for a long time, he said.

In a social media post, Vijayan said the 50th year of Emergency reminds us of the plight of the current Indian political scenario. "Today, the country is experiencing an undeclared emergency. If former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi misused the Indian Constitution, Sangh Parivar is today trying to undo the Constitution," he said.

For countless people, who fought against the Emergency, it was not just a historical lesson, it is a searing memory of the tyranny inflicted by the regime, he said. "We must preserve the history of the Emergency as a source of energy for future struggles, ensuring these memories are passed down to future generations," he added.
