NEW DELHI: Be mindful of social media and refrain from impulsive posts, stated official guidelines issued for those selected for the civil services this year (2024 batch).
The guidelines, issued by Mussoorie-based Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration ( LBSNAA ), also emphasise: “It’s important to keep a diligent account of financial issues and reject all forms of inducement such as gifts, hospitality and free publicity. In this context care has to be taken that your success is not leveraged inappropriately at any stage.”
It added that the selected candidates should start following these norms from now on and should also familiarise their family members with the cultural norms of the service. The premier academy for training of civil servants also said “any kind of social media that promotes self is strongly discouraged”.
The advisory comes at a time when several civil servants seek to boost their social media presence. Some of the senior IAS officers told TOI that contrary to the earlier norm when civil servants remained in the background and focused on execution of assigned tasks, now there is self publicity by officers using social media in some cases.
The guideline said officers should “pause and reflect” on the possible impact before posting any comment. “...You should remain mindful, even at this stage, of avoiding posts that would or could defame the service ot its members...It is advisable to avoid posting any content lest it may lead to misinterpretation at an individual/ institutional level,” it said.
The academy has also urged the new recruits to show compassion and engage with people in a manner that while expressing their viewpoint they must not hurt others’ sentiments. It said they must ensure their personal conduct and official and social interface with the general public, people’s representatives, corporate entities, civil society organisations, govt personnel and vulnerable sections of the society is “courteous, respectful, dignified and appropriate”.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged civil servants to treat citizens as Gods and serve them. He had told young officers to reach out to the poor and their concerns.
