RAIPUR: PM Narendra Modi declared Saturday that the "day is not far" when every corner of the country will be free from Maoist insurgency , saying that of 125 districts affected by Left-wing extremism 11 years ago, only three now show traces of violence.
Addressing the 25th foundation day of Chhattisgarh in Raipur, Modi said the state was "freeing itself from Naxalism and Maoist terror", and credited a decade of coordinated security operations and development outreach for the turnaround. He inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth Rs 14,000 crore, including new roads, housing, healthcare, and connectivity initiatives, and opened the new Vidhan Sabha building.
"For over 55 years, this land suffered because of violence," Modi said. "I cannot leave my tribal brothers and sisters to be ruined in this game of violence. I cannot watch mothers crying for their sons. That is why, when you gave me an opportunity in 2014, I took a pledge to free Bharat from Maoist terror. Today, the nation is seeing the results."
Modi's remarks reinforced home minister Amit Shah's target to end Maoist insurgency by March 31, 2026, through a twin strategy of intelligence-led security action and accelerated development in tribal regions. Shah has ruled out talks with armed groups, urging them to surrender and join the mainstream under the govt's rehabilitation policy. The PM cited a series of recent surrenders as proof of progress. "Just a few days ago, over 30 Maoists surrendered in Kanker, and earlier more than 200 in Bastar . Across the country, dozens of people who once had bounties worth lakhs and crores have now laid down arms and accepted the Constitution," he said.
Modi accused past govts of ignoring the plight of tribal communities for political gain. "Those who now pretend to uphold the Constitution and shed crocodile tears in the name of social justice are the ones who, for their own political gain, subjected you to injustice for decades," he said. "Because of Maoist terror, children were denied schools, patients had no hospitals, and anyone who tried to serve - a doctor or a teacher - was blown up by bombs."
He contrasted the past with today's atmosphere of renewal. "In Bastar, there is no fear but celebration now. Events like Bastar Olympics are being organised there. Imagine, if Chhattisgarh could progress this far despite the challenge of Naxalism, how fast it will move once that challenge is gone." Modi said electricity reached Chikapalli village in Bijapur district for the first time in seven decades, and construction has begun on Maoist den Abujhmarh's first school at Rekawaya.
Modi said his govt's mantra is to help whoever needs it. "Whenever a crisis arises anywhere in the world, whenever a disaster strikes, India steps forward as a reliable partner to provide help. India is always the first responder," he said. "In our tradition, every religious ritual concludes with the proclamation that may the world prosper and may goodwill prevail among all beings."
