Colin Allred, a former NFL linebacker who transitioned into a Democratic Party politician from Texas, is engaged in an 'underdog' battle to unseat GOP Senator Ted Cruz in the November elections. If elected, the 41-year-old would become the first Black Senator from Texas. However, Allred's bid for the Senate is significant for more than just that. Amid anti-incumbency in twice as many Senate seats as the GOP, Texas could be the Blue party's only chance at flipping a Senate seat in November. Allred, a native of Dallas, Texas, was raised by a single mother. He is a US House Representative from Texas' 32nd district since 2019. He was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in the 2006 NFL draft. He played for three seasons in the NFL, from 2007 to 2010, appearing in 32 games. He left the sport in 2011 and enrolled at the UC Berkeley School of Law. After graduation, Allred became active in the Democrat circle in Texas, working at Political Action Committees in the state. He had a brief stint as an assistant in the Obama administration's Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of General Counsel, before starting work as a civil rights attorney. As per a memo published by Dallas-based Dallas Morning News, Allred married Alexandra Eber on March 25, 2017, "in an intimate ceremony surrounded by nature." Alexandra Eber was an attorney at the law firm Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP at the time of her marriage. They met at a Law of Democracy class at UC Berkeley. They have two children, one born in 2019 and the other in 2021. The marriage memo further states that Alexandra Eber completed her undergraduate degree from Occidental College, studying politics and religious studies. His mother is a chef and wildlife rehabilitator while her father is a retired attorney. Allred promotes himself as a bipartisan problem-solver and projects himself as someone calm and moderate. He is relying on endorsements from Republicans like Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, while distancing himself from Kamala Harris, in a state Donald Trump is likely to win. His campaign highlights abortion rights strongly, considered a winning issue for the Democrats in other Red states, like Kentucky and Kansas, since the overturning of Roe v Wade by Donald Trump-appointed Supreme Court judges. He has also been criticizing his opponent, Senator Ted Cruz, over the latter's trip to Mexico during a deadly winter storm in Texas. Notably, Allred faced off with Cruz in the only debate of the Texas Senate race on October 16, and traded attacks over issues like abortion and immigration.
