has launched an extraordinary attack on French counterpart after quitting a G7 summit in Canada early and returning to Washington. The US president had skipped out of the event, attended by world leaders, including UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Macron himself, on Monday.
At the time, questioned during a photocall including both of Mr Macron and Sir Keir, among others, he said: "I have to be back as soon as I can. I wish I could stay for tomorrow, but they understand, this is big stuff."
His move prompted Mr Macron to suggest he was going to work on a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
However Mr Trump took exception to his remarks in a scathing post on Truth Social. The 79-year-old declared: "Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to DC to work on a 'cease fire' between Israel and Iran. Wrong!
"He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. "Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!"
Also on Truth Social, Mr Trump warned "everyone should evacuate Tehran" with pictures showing huge traffic jams as people try to leave the Iranian capital.
The conflict between Israel and Iran has been top of the agenda at the summit of wealthy democracies, taking place in Canada.
Earlier on Monday, he criticised Iran for refusing to agree to a nuclear deal with his administration.
The Israeli military has called for some 330,000 residents of a neighbourhood in the city centre to evacuate.
Tehran is one of the largest cities in the Middle East, with around 10 million people, roughly equivalent to the entire population of . People have been fleeing since the hostilities began.
Israel says its sweeping assault on Iran's top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites and ballistic missile programme is necessary to prevent its longtime adversary from getting any closer to building an atomic weapon.
Iran has retaliated by launching more than 370 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel.
So far, 24 people have been killed in Israel and more than 500 wounded.
The Israeli military said a new barrage of missiles was launched on Tuesday, and explosions could be heard in northern Israel.
