An Oscar-winning movie musical with a star-studded cast is coming to Netflix this month. Moulin Rouge!, a jukebox musical set in Paris, France, came out to great fanfare in 2001. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the romantic drama tells the story of an English poet, Christian, who falls in love with the star of the Moulin Rouge, a cabaret actress called Satine.
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor play the lead roles, with other stars in the movie include Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh, John Leguizamo, and popstar Kylie Minogue. Moulin Rouge! received eight nominations at the 74th Oscars and took home two: one for Best Production Design and one for Best Costume Design.
The film also won three BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, multiple Satellite Awards, and was nominated for a Grammy. Reflecting on the movie years later, Kidman said she "loved" Luhrmann's creative process.
The actress told GQ: "When I got the role, I thought, 'Oh my God, this is amazing. I get to do a musical. I love Satine.' And then when we started, I was like, 'I'm not going to be able to deliver for him.' Because it was like-singing live, dancing, on top of all the comedy and the drama."
Moulin Rouge! is known for its music, with most songs being covers, other than the renowned Come What May. Songs in the film include Nature Boy, Rhythm of the Night, Children of the Revolution, Your Song, and Lady Marmalade - a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic for Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa and Pink.
The movie has garnered an impressive 7.6 stars out of 10 on IMDb from 310,000 ratings. One reviewer called the film "spectacular", adding that it was "beautiful and artistic" with impressive costumes, music and actors.
Another said: "It is a whirlwind of sound and imagery that wants nothing less than to suck you into its world of Truth, Beauty, and most of all love. And beneath the pageantry, the breathtaking visuals, and the songs, that is what this movie is; a love story." A third posted: "This is a beautiful motion picture, which takes us to the fantastic and magical world of the Moulin Rouge. The music, the dancing, the plot, everything is just delicious ... Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie... it's a 'must see.'"
Meanwhile, someone else wrote: "I have not ever felt for a movie the way I do about "Moulin Rouge." It is not just a movie...it is a cinematic experience the likes of which I have never before seen. The story, the music, the acting, the visual imagery strikes emotion in me I never before thought possible from a film."
Moulin Rouge! will be coming to Netflix on Thursday November 13th.
