is closing at least 26 branches across June amid a transition by multiple banking giants to online services. Banks and building societies have shut more than 6,300 high street branches at a rate of 53 per month over the last decade, according to a report from .
This amounts to around 64% of the branches in operation in 2015, the consumer group says. Closures for 25 locations across the UK were announced for June, some of which have already occurred.
closed its Alfreton and Uttoxeter branches for good on Monday (June 2), with the shutters pulled down on its Mexborough, and Stockport, Heaton Moor locations the following day. Meanwhile, two more will be closing today (Wednesday, June 4), in Stockton-on-Tees, and Ellesmere Port.
Then on Thursday, its Stoke-on-Trent branch in Longton, and Accrington locations will close, with at least 17 more closing through the rest of June.
A statement on 's website addressing its recent closures says: "Banking has changed dramatically in recent years, with an increased demand for and online services, as our customers benefit from a faster and easier way to bank.
"Closing a branch is a decision we take very seriously." It adds: "We know it can affect those less confident with the alternatives we offer.
"We'll always work hard to guide and support you through the changes and find the best way to serve you from now on."
