Man Utd have taken strong action after two players left Ruben Amorim red-faced

Manchester United have started the summer transfer window exactly how they needed to after an embarrassingly toothless 2024/25 season. Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is already through the door, and Brentford talisman Bryan Mbeumo in upgrading Ruben Amorim's attack.

The 25-year-old reportedly wants to join United, who are now set to open talks with Brentford and attempt to strike an agreement over the transfer. Amorim needs further reinforcements in other areas if he's to enact the level of improvement desperately required after a uniquely torrid campaign at Old Trafford. However, he will be encouraged by how quickly INEOS have moved to address his primary problem position as a priority after months of pain in front of goal.

Amorim's - and Erik ten Hag's - United team managed just 44 goals in 38 Premier League games this term as they slumped to a record-low 15th-place finish.

The Portuguese head coach's fortunes in England have been a stark contrast to those in his homeland, where he turned Sporting into one of the world's most exciting attacking sides.

Cunha and Mbeumo's arrivals would significantly shift his firepower in the right direction, though, after both left Amorim red-faced with stellar seasons.

The former notched up 15 goals and six assists in 33 league appearances, operating in attacking midfield, on the wing and as Wolves' striker.

Meanwhile, Mbeumo recorded a career-best campaign when it comes to productivity in the final third, plundering 20 goals and eight assists across 38 league outings.

Combined, Cunha and Mbeumo's goal tally stands at 35, just nine fewer than United's 44. It's a damning stat that emphasises the need for the action the Red Devils are taking.

While it's a humiliating indicator of just how bad Amorim's side have been, it offers exciting promise about the number of goals he could be adding to his ranks.

In comparison, Bruno Fernandes and Amad were United's top goalscorers in the Premier League this season, with eight each.

Alejandro Garnacho was next with six, while Rasmus Hojlund managed just four, and Joshua Zirkzee could only conjure up three in his debut season.

Marcus Rashford scored six times across 25 appearances for United and Aston Villa, and he's widely expected to leave permanently this summer.

Whether Amorim will pursue a striker if Mbeumo joins remains to be seen after missing out on top target Liam Delap.

The Ipswich Town striker is joining Chelsea in a £30million deal, which could have prompted the swoop for Mbeumo as an alternative.

Any further incomings would depend on player sales, with most of Amorim's senior squad in the shop window.
