Jason Donovan opened up about his breakup with Kylie Minogue after the former couple's love affair almost four decades ago. They dated for three years from 1986, while playing on-screen sweethearts Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in the Australian soap opera Neighbours. However, a popular on-screen couple, their relationship in real life didn't last. In a candid interview, Jason, 56, made a heartbreaking revelation about their short-lived romance.
Speaking in the Big Issue earlier this year, the actor opened up about his friendship with Kylie. "Was [Kylie] my first love? Probably," Donovan reflects. "And it was not an easy break-up. She and I were connected personally and professionally, it's a very difficult relationship to escape. And not only that, we were in everyone's living room across the world. It's quite a unique position."
After they left the show, the couple duetted on single Especially for You, which hit number one in the UK Charts in 1988.
Jason admitted he had feelings of "jealousy" after Kylie went on to find major success in the music world.
"When she got approached to record, I was competitive. I could see her having this opportunity," he explained.
"I'd always sung, but never really sort of taken it that seriously. But I wanted some of what she was getting! I was jealous I suppose. Then those opportunities started to flesh out for me as well."
Jason went on to have the best-selling album of 1989 and four UK number one singles.
Kylie and Jason broke up that same year.
The split was reportedly initiated by Kylie, who began dating Michael Hutchence shortly thereafter. Despite the breakup, they remained friends.
