The International Cricket Council on Thursday announced new powerplay rules for T20 matches. These rules will be for those matches in which overs are cut for some reason and it is not possible to play the full 20 overs. The ICC told how many fielders will be allowed to stay outside the 30-yard circle during the powerplay in the new playing conditions for T20. This decision of the ICC can double the excitement of T20 cricket.

These rules will be implemented in July. According to this, if the overs are reduced to eight overs before the start of an innings, then there will now be a powerplay of 2.2 overs. During the powerplay, there will be only two fielders outside the 30-yard circle. Earlier, if eight overs were played in an innings, then there used to be a powerplay of three overs. Similarly, according to the new rule, now there will be a powerplay of 1.3 overs in an innings of five overs.

The table on ICC's website states that for a six-over innings, 1.5 overs will be of powerplay, for a seven-over innings, 2.1 overs will be of powerplay, for an eight-over innings, 2.2 overs, while for a nine-over innings, 2.4 overs will be of powerplay. For a 10-over innings, 3 overs will be of powerplay. For an 11-over inning, 3.2 overs will be of the powerplay, for a 12-over inning, 3.4 overs will be of the powerplay.

If the innings are of more than this, the powerplay overs will not be cut, i.e., the powerplay will be of six overs only.
