A man in his forties has died following a shooting outside a Costco in London, the Metropolitan Police have said.

The victim, in his 40s, was shot on Imperial Way in Croydon shortly after 5pm on Thursday. Paramedics treated him for multiple injuries at the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly after. A cordon was put in place between the superstore's car park and the loading bay of nearby Selco. The Met didn't release the victim's name but said they are supporting his family. The force's Major Incident Team is now investigating the daylight attack and is urging witnesses to get in touch.

Pictures taken at the scene yesterday showed several ambulances surrounded by a crowd just off Purley Way. Imperial Way remains part-closed to traffic this evening, but Costco remains open, My London reports.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Whitten, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said: "This was a tragic incident and my thoughts are with the man's family at this difficult time. Our team of specially trained officers are supporting them as are our investigation progresses.

"Our enquiries are ongoing and we would urge any witnesses to come forward and share information with us." Anyone who saw the shooting, or has any relevant information, is asked to contact 101 or Crimestoppers, quoting CAD 6530/19JUN.

Police were this afternoon continuing their investigation as officers and forensic teams were seen scouring the area on their hands and knees. A group of specialist officers also appeared to be using a drone at the scene.
