A woman has sought advice on whether the name ‘Ozzy’ would be an acceptable name choice for a baby girl, with many drawing comparisons to the legendary heavy metal icon who sadly died on July 22. Choosing a name for a child is no easy task, with parents required to find something that’ll suit their offspring from a sweet new-born baby all the way to their adulthood.
Many people seek to honour their favourite television shows, books, musicians and more when naming their children, often taking inspiration from a variety of art and media sources. When it comes to Ozzy Osbourne though, all fans know ‘Ozzy’ wasn’t his real name and is a nickname based on his surname, Osbourne.
The singer and songwriter, born in Birmingham, was called John Michael Osbourne but has been known as Ozzy throughout his decades-long career as a pioneer of music.

For many people, the name Ozzy will forever be associated with the Black Sabbath frontman. One woman took to Reddit to seek opinions on using the name for a little girl, with several keen to point out the link to the musician.
She simply penned: “Is Ozzy a tragedeigh for a girl? Not pregnant but just for opinions lol.”
‘Tragedeigh’ is a common term online used to refer to names that sound made up, or incorporate an abundance of unnecessary letters to try and make the name appear more unique than it actually is.
The Reddit user continued: “ETA [edited to add]: thanks all this was just a hypothetical question! Seen someone on Instagram that’s little girl is named Ozzy and I know this group don’t hold back their opinions and wanted to see.
“I thought it was cute but seems the majority do not think so”.
In the comments section, people were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: “When I think Ozzy I think Ozzy Osborne… you decide from there”.
Someone else said: “Ozzy Osbourne is called John Michael Osbourne, it’s a [nickname] from his last name. I wouldn’t go for Ozzy as only first name, especially not a girl.”
A third Reddit user said: “Yes! In so many ways with no offence to Ozzy Osbourne because I like him, but the name sounds ugly.”
Another added: “It made me think Ozzy Osbourne or Ozymandias, which technically could be interesting to specific crowds.”
But someone else said: “I think it is kind of cute? Is it short for anything? Most people will associate it with Ozzy Osbourne...so that’s something to consider.”
Founded in Birmingham in 1968, the original Black Sabbath line-up consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and, of couse, vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.
They’re consistently hailed as the pioneers of heavy metal music, helping redefine the rock genre.
Black Sabbath’s eponymous debut album, released in 1970, actually received negative reviews from critics but was a commercial success, leading to the release of their second album that same year, Paranoid.
Their follow up, Masters of Reality, released in 1971, solidified their standing as a force to be reckoned with.
The three records, which spawned a medley of hits including The Wizard, Paranoid, Iron Man, War Pigs, Children of the Grave and more, played a significant role in defining the genre of metal.
By the time they released Sabbath Bloody Sabbath in 1973, critics had started warming up to them.
