Mitchum users issue warning to users of these deodorants after 'burning' reaction

Popular deodorant Mitchum has come under fire after users reported a 'burning' sensation after using the product. One user took to TikTok to ask if anyone else's armpits had been 'viciously attacked' by the deodorant, and shortly after, the brand went into a huge investigation when an alarming number of people were reportedly having the same symptoms.

Numerous users had shared on social media their irritations from using the Mitchum 48hr Powder Fresh roll-on deodorant that were taking 'weeks' to heal.

One woman went as far as to say she nearly "had to call an ambulance" after how bad it had stung her. Mitchum claimed batches from eight of its products, sold across the UK, Ireland and South Africa, had all been affected by a change to the manufacturing process, leading to the reaction.

Another had said she experienced her armpits "scabbing over" and was unable to use deodorant for over a month afterwards. After the social media storm of users detailing the same symptoms, the company took to Instagram to say

: "We are sorry to those who were impacted and for the time it took to complete our investigation.

“While the formula hasn’t changed, a change in the manufacturing process of one of our raw materials altered how the product interacts with the skin in some consumers.”

The post detailed they had gone back to their original methods, and assured users "your wellbeing means everything to us and we are actively working to remove these batches from shelves."

Pharmaceutical professor Penny Ward, from King's College London, told The Daily Mail: “With respect to this deodorant, the contents of the 'new' format includes acetyl cedrene, which has been shown to be an irritant in patch testing as well as vanillin, which can also be a skin irritant in some individuals. Generally the irritant chemicals are most likely to be those which are the added fragrances."

The expert noted how this type of pain could be signalling an infection and added: "If one develops a reaction to a topical product, it's a good idea to stop using it and switch to something else (after the rash has settled)."

Several batches of the following products have been affected: Mitchum Women Roll On 100ml Powder Fresh, Shower Fresh, Unscented, Pure Fresh, Flower Fresh, and Mitchum Men Roll On 100ml Ice Fresh, Clean Control, and Sport.
