DWP Winter Fuel Payment not automatic for all State Pensioners

Send Push

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that eligible state pensioners may receive up to £300 as part of the Winter Fuel Payment for the 2025–2026 winter season. This financial support, aimed at assisting older individuals with heating costs, will be distributed to approximately nine million people across England and Wales.

While the majority of recipients will receive the payment automatically, the DWP has issued a reminder that certain individuals must submit a manual claim in order to receive the funds. A claim form is now available via the official government website for those required to apply.

Eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment is based on age and personal circumstances. Individuals born before 22 September 1959 may be entitled to between £100 and £300, depending on their situation during the qualifying week, which falls between 15 and 21 September 2025.

A manual application is necessary if the claimant has not previously received a Winter Fuel Payment or has deferred their State Pension since their last payment. Claims may be submitted by post using the form available on GOV.UK from 15 September 2025. Alternatively, claims can be made by telephone from 13 October 2025 by contacting the Winter Fuel Payment Centre on 0800 731 0160.

Applicants should be prepared to provide their National Insurance number, bank or building society details, and, if applicable, the date of their marriage or civil partnership.

The deadline for submitting claims is March 31, 2026. Most payments are expected to be made in November or December 2025. Eligible individuals will usually receive a letter confirming the payment amount and the account into which the funds will be deposited.

Those who do not receive a notification letter or payment by January 28, 2026 are advised to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre for further assistance.
