Let us tell you that the story of "Haymarket Massacre" is associated with this day.

On 1 May 1886, workers in Chicago had organized a big movement demanding a longer working day. During this period, the "Haymarket Massacre" took place in which many workers lost their lives. This movement was organized by the workers regarding their working hours.
Their demand was that their working hours should be reduced from 12-16 to 8 hours and one day should be declared as a working day for them because working for so many hours continuously had a bad effect on the health of the workers and they were so poor that they could not even afford treatment for themselves.
'Labor Day' was celebrated for the first time in India in 1923 (Labor Day 2025) It was after this movement that in 1889 the International Socialist Conference approved celebrating May 1 as International 'Labor Day'. In India, this day was first celebrated in Chennai in 1923.
