Step-by-step process of filing ITR online from home

Visit the official portal

Visit the Income Tax e-filing website.

Log in to your account

Use your PAN, Aadhaar or registered mobile/email to log in. If you are a first-time user, you need to register first.

Start filing your return

Click on ‘File Return’ under the e-file section.

Select the assessment year (for example, 2024-25 for FY 2023-24).

Select the mode of filing: Online (recommended for individuals).

Select the correct user type

Select Individual (other options: Hindu Undivided Family – HUF, Others).

Select the ITR form

For most salaried individuals, ITR-1 is applicable.

If you have income from more than one house property, capital gains, etc., use ITR-2.

State the reason for filing ITR

Usually under section 139(1) if your income exceeds the taxable limit.

Bank account verification

Make sure your bank account is linked and valid for refund.

If not already linked, you can do so during the process.

Review of pre-filled data

Your Form 26AS and AIS will auto-fill some fields.

Double-check your salary details, interest income, deductions and tax paid.

Submit and verify

Once verified, submit your return.

You can e-verify instantly through Aadhaar OTP, net banking or bank account verification.

Alternatively, if e-verification is not possible, send a signed physical copy to the Central Processing Centre (CPC), Bengaluru.
