Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Riding high on its historic eighth consecutive win as India’s cleanest city, Indore will now mentor Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, in enhancing its cleanliness standards.

Indoreans celebrated the momentous win on Friday with processions, band performances and public gatherings. A victory rally from Indore Airport to Rajwada was led by civic officials and sanitation workers, drawing large crowds of enthusiastic citizens.

As part of the central government’s initiative to replicate successful urban models across the country, Indore has been selected to mentor Varanasi, a city that attracts millions of domestic and international visitors every year but faces major sanitation challenges due to high footfall and riverside ghats.

Commissioner Shivam Verma added that Indore would share its best practices in waste segregation, door-to-door collection, garbage-free city frameworks and public engagement programmes with Varanasi officials. Training workshops, field visits and joint projects would form part of the mentorship plan.

The mentoring initiative will be jointly coordinated by the urban development ministry and the Indore Municipal Corporation, with full support from both state governments.

Indore’s victory in the Super Swachh League marked not just its own achievement, but set the stage for inter-city collaboration to uplift sanitation standards across India, said IMC officials.

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said, "This is not just an award but a responsibility. We are proud to support Varanasi in its journey towards becoming cleaner and healthier. Indore’s model built on innovation, public participation and relentless effort by sanitation workers will now inspire one of India’s most iconic cities."

MP Shankar Lalwani, "The Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat vision has now become a national movement and Indore stands at the forefront. Guiding Varanasi is a matter of great pride for us and an opportunity to showcase Indore’s leadership on a national platform."
