After the defeat in the first Test match against England, the demand for change in the Indian team has gained momentum. India, which played in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, lost the opening match of the England tour. In this match, India's top five batsmen performed well, but the poor performance of the lower order and the failure of bowlers other than Jasprit Bumrah to make a proper contribution cost India heavily.

Bumrah could not get support from the other end.
Shubman Gill was made the captain in place of Rohit, but he lost in his first match as captain. However, India still had a chance as it was the first match of the series. For India, the lower order did not contribute well in batting in the first innings and second innings, which cost heavily. At the same time, the bowlers also could not perform well in the second innings, which was a major reason for the defeat. India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who took five wickets in the first innings, remained empty-handed in the second innings and could not take a single wicket.
Gambhir defends Shardul as bowling less.
India's head coach Gautam Gambhir defended captain Shubman Gill's decision to make Shardul Thakur bowl less in the first match against England, but it will be difficult to justify his selection in the second Test starting July 2. Shardul, playing his first Test since December 2023, was not well utilized in fast bowling and he also disappointed the team with his batting. He scored a total of five runs off 20 balls in two innings. Shardul bowled only six overs in the first innings of the match and 10 overs in the second innings. In such a situation, questions are being raised about giving him preference over a specialist bowler. Although Shardul had raised India's hopes of victory by taking two consecutive wickets on the fifth day of the match, his bowling lacked edge and sharpness. He and Prasidh Krishna bowled a lot of weak balls, which did not put pressure on the England batsmen.
Will India go with two spinners?
India had to face defeat despite dominating for most of the time in the first match. Despite this defeat, the team does not need to worry much. However, some changes are certain in the playing 11 for the Edgbaston Test. Teams in England have often taken the field with four fast bowlers, but given the dry weather at present, both Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja can make it to the playing 11. Questions are also being raised on Jadeja's bowling as he could not make much impact on the fifth-day pitch that was helpful for spinners. There is little chance of any other change in the bowling department as there is a gap of a week between the first and second Test matches and in such a situation, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is expected to remain in the playing 11.

Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who is waiting for his Test debut, is likely to sit out again as the team management would like to give more chances to Prasidh. Mohammed Siraj did not get many wickets in the first Test but he constantly troubled the England batsmen. Jadeja managed to control the run rate in the first innings but failed to take any wickets, but apart from bowling, he can make an effective contribution with the bat in any situation.
