After fizzling out at the box office, Sanjay Dutt’s horror-comedy The Bhootnii is hoping for redemption—and a wider audience—on digital screens. The film is set for its OTT and television premiere on ZEE5 and Zee Cinema on July 18 at 8 PM, offering a second chance for viewers to catch the quirky, spooky tale that blends campus romance, ghostly obsession, and dark comedy.

Directed and written by Sidhaant Sachdev, The Bhootnii released theatrically on May 1, 2025, but failed to make an impact despite a star-studded cast. Produced by Soham Rockstar Entertainment, Deepak Mukut, and Sanjay Dutt himself, the film features Sunny Singh, Mouni Roy, Palak Tiwari, Aasif Khan, and YouTuber Nick, alongside Dutt in a pivotal role.

Plot of The Bhootnii


Set in Delhi’s fictional St. Vincent College, the film introduces the eerie legend of the “Virgin Tree”—a supposed magical spot that grants true love to those who pray beneath it on Valentine’s Day. But there’s a sinister catch: each year on Holika Dahan, a student mysteriously dies under strange circumstances, supposedly claimed by an unseen force.

Heartbroken student Shantanu (played by Sunny Singh) becomes the latest to tempt fate, offering his plea under the tree for real love. Instead, he awakens Mohabbat, a ghostess with a tragic past—and a dangerously obsessive streak. Her love for Shantanu quickly spirals into something terrifying, as she begins haunting anyone who tries to come between them.

To stop the escalating paranormal chaos, the college ropes in Baba, played by Sanjay Dutt—a para-physicist, eccentric ghost hunter, and former student of the institution. With bizarre gadgets and a no-nonsense attitude, Baba dives deep into Mohabbat’s backstory, uncovering the trauma that turned her into a spirit scorned.

While The Bhootnii plays with genre tropes and tongue-in-cheek humour, it also subtly touches on themes of grief, loneliness, and unfulfilled desire. The film blends slapstick comedy with eerie supernatural elements, making it a rare hybrid in Hindi cinema’s horror-comedy space.
