Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that all school across the state will remain shut from August 27 to 30 in the wake of heavy rains forecast.

Incessant rainfall over the past two days have flooded villages across several districts of Punjab.

"It has been raining heavily for the past few days and the weather department has predicted heavy rains for the next few days as well. In view of this, all primary, secondary, senior secondary government and private schools in the state will remain closed from August 27 to August 30," Mann said on X.

The Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers are in spate due to the heavy rainfall in their catchment areas in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. This has led to the flooding of large farmlands in villages along these rivers.

The release of surplus water from the Pong and Bhakra dams have also compounding problems for villages in several districts of Punjab.

Floodwater from Beas rushed into agricultural fields near Motla, Haler Janardhan, Sanial, Kolian and Mehtabpur villages in Mukerian sub-division of Hoshiarpur on Sunday evening after heavy rain in the Chakki Khad catchment of Pathankot led to a surge of water in the river, causing it to overflow from embankments.

The Punjab government has already announced loss assessment to ascertain damages to crops and infrastructure.

The meteorological department has predicted more rains in the coming days.
