#MeToo accused Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein battling bone marrow cancer: A look at symptoms

Send Push
Former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein, who has faced significant legal troubles, has been diagnosed with a type of bone marrow cancer, according to reports from U.S. media on Monday. This comes about a month after he was hit with a fresh sexual assault charge. The 72-year-old Weinstein is said to have chronic myeloid leukemia and is currently receiving medical care in a New York prison, based on information from NBC News sources.

His legal healthcare representative, Craig Rothfeld, chose not to comment on Weinstein's health status when approached by Reuters, citing the need to respect his privacy.

Back in July, Weinstein was moved from a New York City jail to a medical facility for treatment related to several health issues, including complications from COVID-19 and pneumonia affecting both lungs. He was also being treated for other conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid buildup around his heart and lungs.

Additionally, Weinstein underwent emergency heart surgery in September. His initial COVID-19 diagnosis occurred in March 2020 while in prison, following a period in which he was hospitalized for heart problems, chest pain, and low blood pressure before his first encounter with the virus and his sentencing.

Weinstein, who has consistently denied any non-consensual sexual encounters, was convicted on rape charges in February 2020—a ruling that played a key role in the #MeToo movement. However, in April, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction, concluding that Weinstein had not received a fair trial due to the improper inclusion of testimony from individuals he was not formally charged with assaulting.

He remains in prison, awaiting a new trial. In addition to this, Weinstein still faces two other criminal charges stemming from an earlier case, which he also pleaded not guilty. These include a first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape charge. In September, Weinstein also pleaded not guilty to another sexual assault charge.

Once a major figure in the film industry, Weinstein is best known for producing movies such as Django Unchained, Shakespeare in Love, Good Will Hunting, and Inglourious Basterds.
