Popular singer Maithili Thakur, who transformed and popularised folk music for an entire generation, will be contesting the Bihar elections on BJP ticket. The 25-year-old star will contest the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga.

Maithili Thakur was born on July 25, 2000 in Madhubani in Bihar. Her family later relocated to Najafgarh, Delhi, where they faced financial hardships after her father, Ramesh Thakur, lost his job. However, music served as their foundation.
Her father, a classical musician himself, served as her mentor and teacher, while her mother, Pooja Thakur, took care of the household. Maithili has two brother, Ayachi and Rishabh, who frequently come together with her, forming musical trio that honours India’s folk traditions. She focused on Indian classical and Maithili folk music.

Maithili was homeschooled until Class 5 and then was enrolled in an MCD school at about 12–13 years old, according to a Times Now report. Acknowledging her remarkable gift, she received a music scholarship to Bal Bhavan International School.
Her rise to the top was not overnight. Maithili encountered several rejections from well-known reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs and Indian Idol Junior. However, she continued to strive, and in 2017, she ultimately gained recognition as the first runner-up of Rising Star, all while being a student.

Maithili started to share her performances on Facebook and YouTube, winning millions of hearts with her melodious interpretations of traditional folk songs. Despite her fame, Maithili has purposefully distanced herself from Bollywood. This came the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. she said she would refrain from providing her voice for Hindi films in protest against the "unjust culture" of the industry.
