India faced a five-wicket loss against England in the opening match of the five-Test series held in Leeds on Tuesday, June 24. Despite setting a target of 371 runs in the fourth innings, the Shubman Gill-led Indian team was unable to defend it. The primary factor in the defeat was the lack of breakthroughs from the Indian bowling attack. Additionally, multiple dropped catches throughout the game further worsened India's position, with Yashasvi Jaiswal having a particularly difficult time in the field.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century [101] in India’s first innings of the Leeds Test. He, along with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, all notched up centuries to help India post a formidable total of 471 runs.

Rishabh Pant, in particular, stood out by becoming the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. His efforts played a crucial role in setting a challenging target of 371 runs for England.

In response, Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley (65) gave England a blistering start with a 188-run opening stand. Joe Root anchored the innings with an unbeaten 53 off 84 balls, while Jamie Smith, who stayed not out on 44, sealed the win for England with a six off Ravindra Jadeja.

Duckett, who also made 62 runs in the first innings, was named Player of the Match for his consistent performances across both innings.
