A 25-year-old individual from Madhya Pradesh who underwent gender reassignment surgery has accused her partner of rape and physical abuse after he refused to marry her following the procedure, police officials said. The complainant and the accused Shubham Yadav, both approximately 25 years old, first met in Narmadapuram around 10 years ago and had been in a long-term same-sex relationship, according to police.
The complainant, a resident of Obedullaganj in Raisen district, alleged that the accused pressured her to undergo the gender-affirming surgery but later refused to marry her. “A few months after the surgery, the accused started avoiding her and subsequently refused to marry her,” police quoted the complainant as saying.
Superintendent of Police Gurkaran Singh told TOI, “The case was registered at Bhopal and later transferred to Narmadapuram for investigation.” An FIR has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.
The complainant claimed that she was confined at the accused’s residence in Gwaltoli, Narmadapuram, for several days. Police plan to take her to the location for further verification. The accused, identified as Shubham Yadav, is currently absconding, and police teams have been formed to trace his whereabouts.
The case was initially registered as a ‘Zero FIR’ by the Bhopal police on Wednesday, which allows any police station to register a complaint regardless of jurisdiction. The matter was then transferred to Narmadapuram police, where the accused resides, for further investigation. Gandhinagar police station in-charge Brijendra Merskole told PTI that the FIR has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to rape and physical abuse.
Merskole added that the complainant has also alleged that the accused practices occult rituals and exploited her before the surgery. The complainant underwent the surgery at a hospital in Indore and was medically examined to confirm her gender change, officials said.
