Australian CEO blames poor for poverty mindset, gets schooled

An Australian CEO faced significant backlash from Reddit users after he asserted that the poor are becoming poorer due to their " poverty thinking." Joseph Darby, the CEO of Become Wealth, a wealth management firm, argued that when people claim the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer, it's because of their own choices.

“The rich are becoming RICHER, while the poor are becoming POORER. (But why is that?) It all comes down to mindset,” he stated in a LinkedIn post.

He elaborated on the behaviors that he believes keep the poor in their financial situations. “They blame their circumstances, concentrate on short-term gains, purchase liabilities, seek the cheapest options, think ‘I can’t afford that,’ dwell on their problems, and exhibit poverty thinking,” he claimed. In contrast, he noted that the wealthy often possess an “abundance mindset,” which allows them to create opportunities and plan for future generations. “The rich invest in assets, look for the best value, ask ‘How can I afford that?’ and seek solutions,” he explained.

“I’m not suggesting that external factors don’t influence wealth inequalities. However, your financial future is not predetermined,” he continued, mentioning that self-made individuals like Elon Musk and Oprah Winfrey encountered significant obstacles. “But they didn’t let those challenges hinder them. You also have the power to break the cycle. It all begins with taking responsibility for your life and refusing to adopt a victim mentality. Instead of saying ‘I can’t,’ start asking ‘How can I?’” he urged.

The former army veteran turned CEO was criticized on Reddit for sharing what many perceived as a tone-deaf opinion. One user, who had been unemployed for some time, remarked, “Having been jobless for a while, I fail to see how an abundance mindset can help. It frustrates me how privileged individuals constantly preach this, as if jobs grow on trees, while I can’t even get a call for an interview.”

Another user wrote, “Of course, it’s entirely the fault of poor people for being poor. There’s nothing to do with the systemic inequities designed to keep them in poverty and enrich the wealthy.”

Reddit users also pointed out the inconsistency in labeling Elon Musk as a self-made man, given his affluent background. One user quipped, “Ah, Elon Musk, the self-made man. He broke the cycle of poverty. His father was just a humble man with nothing but a diamond mine to his name.”
